What do I want the player to see? This week, between learning how to build a main menu page in Blueprint and deciding what additional details I want to add to my house, I started thinking about my player avatar. While I could change its distractingly sci-fi appearance to something that fits my world, I thought back to some of the games I played most as a kid: Doom 2 and Tomb Raider — a first person vs third person game. Lara Croft is an iconic character, designed to be eye-catching and recognisable around the world. Doom Guy is just a pair of hands holding a gun (and a little face in the status bar), you focus more on looking at the monsters, the maze of corridors and finding the keys. I’ve spent weeks building a house in as much detail as I can manage: I don’t want the focus to be drawn away by an avatar. Also, removing the avatar and switching to first person perspective means the camera view can get closer to items in the environment and see them more clearly, for example, as you can see in my latest video capture you get a much better view of the half eaten food on the dining table.
