Something that I really love about multi-faceted storytelling is the way you can use images/objects and how they move or change to tell parts of your story without words. This week I have been thinking about how to incorporate environmental elements into my Unreal Engine project that create a sense of narrative. Some of these immediately catch your attention, like the knocked over dining chair and the plate of half eaten food. Something has happened to the person who was living in this house. But there are also ways I am choosing to decorate the house that tell you what kind of person our missing friend is. They have a large collection of books. A lot of their decor is animal or insect themed and I plan to add a lot of plants, so we know that nature is important to them. Add to this some slightly more off-putting elements, such as an animal skull on the shelf, mouldy bathroom wallpaper, and a room with nothing but some chains in it, and you’ll arouse the player’s curiosity, encouraging them to investigate…
